The right way
No “right way” to ship:
Apple - Design led, ships polished product, few times a year -> Worth 2T
Google - Experiment led, ships min. viable product, every day -> Worth 1.8T
How you build depends on:
- Customers (Enterprise vs. Consumer)
- Culture (Experiment led vs Design led)
- Structure (Top down vs Bottoms Up)
- Phase (Early stage vs Late Stage)
- Talent (Domain experts vs Generalists)
- Product (Hardware vs Software)
- Founders (Perfectionists vs. Hackers)
Some principles don't change:
- Know your customer.
- Start with the problem.
- Consider many solutions.
- Know when to break your "right way".
How to use:
- Align team on “right way” — set culture, development & hiring practices to maintain it. Write it down. No alignment = rowing in opposite directions.
- If you’re debating what to ship, test to see if you’re aligned on “right way”. If you’re not, take the conversation one level higher.
